Whispering Hope Ranch is now a program of
Child Crisis Arizona.
More Than a Camp
Whispering Hope Ranch is a place where campers can do things they never thought possible, where all abilities are welcome and a place of acceptance and respect. The camp facility is a 45-acre ranch located in the cool pines of Payson, AZ designed and built from the ground up to include children and youth with physical, mental and sensory disabilities and welcomes groups for uniquely adapted camp sessions. The organization’s programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of each group, providing a safe and supportive environment for personal growth. The camp can accommodate 160 total staff and campers.
By combining our efforts, we can create a more holistic approach to addressing the diverse needs of the community, fostering a supportive environment for children to thrive and achieve the vision of the Whispering Hope Ranch to expand and enhance the utilization of the facility.
A Place of Possibilities
Through equine therapy, counseling services, and vocational training, participants not only address immediate challenges but also develop life skills, resilience, and a sense of purpose that extends beyond their time at the ranch. Features include specially designed equipment such as adapted saddles used with a wheelchair mounting ramp, aquatic wheelchairs and wheelchair swings to create an inclusive environment and opportunities for all ability-level campers.
Nature’s Nurses
The heart of the Ranch experience is the healing that happens between campers and our gentle animal residents, many of whom also live with disabilities.
Animal interaction and equine-facilitated programs have a wide range of benefits for children with special needs, including:
- Improved emotional stability and self-esteem.
- Accelerated physical, mental and emotional healing.
- Unconditional acceptance – animals are nonjudgmental and uncomplicated.
- Nurturing – psychologically, when humans nurture animals, their own need to be nurtured is fulfilled.
- Increased socialization – animals create a relaxed environment making social interactions more comfortable and easier.
- Safe physical contact – the touch of an animal is non-threatening for children who have suffered abuse.
- Physiological benefits such as decreased heart rate and blood pressure.
