Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit FAQ’s

What is the Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit?

The Qualified Foster Care Tax Credit empowers you to decide on how your tax dollars are used. By making a donation to a qualified charitable organization like Child Crisis Arizona, you have the opportunity to support a cause you deeply care about and make a positive impact in your local community.

You have the opportunity to direct where your state tax dollars go. You can reduce your state taxes by up to $1,173 for couples filing jointly and $587 for single filers when you give to an organization like Child Crisis Arizona.

Do I have to give exactly $587 or $1,173 to benefit from the tax credit?

No. There is no minimum dollar threshold – a taxpayer can make a gift of any size, up to the maximums described above. A taxpayer can make a $10 donation, submit their Arizona Form 352, and receive a tax credit in the amount of $10 from the state of Arizona.

What happens if my credit is larger than what I owe?

Not to worry, unused credits can be carried forward. The state of Arizona and the IRS allow for a 5 consecutive year carryover period when claiming itemized deductions for charitable contributions.

As an example, imagine you donated $1,051 as a household to Child Crisis Arizona; but then, you realize you only have a tax liability of $300. You will receive $300 back from the state of Arizona, but not more than that since your liability was below the gift made.

If you find yourself in this situation, you can carry forward the difference for up to 5 consecutive years! This ensures that even if your liability is lower than a gift, you can still claim that gift in a future tax year against your liability.

What is the difference between a tax credit and tax deduction?

Tax credits directly reduce the amount of taxes you owe, giving you a dollar-for-dollar reduction of your tax liability. A tax credit valued at $1,051, for instance, lowers your tax bill by a corresponding $1,051.

Tax deductions, reduce how much of your income is subject to taxes. Deductions lower your taxable income by the percentage of your highest federal income tax bracket.

Is there a deadline to claim my tax credit?

It depends.

If you’re claiming an Arizona Qualified Foster Care Organization Tax Credit on your Arizona state taxes, you can make a gift and claim it on your state taxes through April 15th of the current year for the prior tax year.

For an Arizona Qualified Foster Care Organization Tax Credit gift to be claimed as a Federal Tax Deduction, you must make your gift prior to December 31st of the tax year you wish to claim it in.

Can I take advantage of other state tax credits?

Yes! You can also take advantage of the Qualifying Charitable Tax Credit, Private School Tuition Tax Credit, Public School Tax Credit, and the Military Family Relief Fund Tax Credit. You can utilize all five tax credits concurrently to reduce your state tax liability. For more information check with your tax professional.

How will I receive confirmation of my donation for Tax Credit documentation?

When donating, indicate that your gift is a Tax Credit donation with QFCO code 10012 and Child Crisis Arizona will send you a receipt to keep for your records.
