Families don't have to match

April 30, 2020

Summary

Michael and David Hale were afraid fostering would mean falling in love with a child only to say goodbye but they decided to take a chance when they heard about a sibling set in need.

After six months together the Hales filed for adoption and were surprised when the children's grandparents in another state came forward seeking custody. Rather than being upset, David and Michael invited the grandparents to get to know them. They began to have regular communication and eventually made plans to spend Christmas together.

During that trip the grandparents saw the bond David and Michael had with the children. They knew the children were safe and cared for and decided not to proceed with trying to get custody. When David and Michael finally adopted the children in February their grandparents were in attendance wearing shirts that read "Families don't have to match."
